shell canyon

Still working on this one -- messing around more with Alias Sketchbook pro for the linework -- I'm really liking the control it provides.

I'm back!

Things got busy at work and home for a little while there... but I'm back now!

Color!

I took one of those costumes and decided to do a color sketch. I'm pretty sure this is going to be the final as far as costume, though I might do some color tweaking.

Render

Thought I'd start rendering a few of these out. I'm keeping things a lot tighter than I usually do, and learning a lot in the process.

Helmet - finished

I picked the strongest one and put a coat of polish on.

More costumes

Still iterating some costumes on this guy. I like how they get crazier as I go, hahaha.

For the last two I was trying to think of specific situations. The fourth was if he would want to use an airborne toxin to kill an animal because of a thick hide (or so he wouldn't ruin the pelt), and the fifth was a sniper camo suit for thick grasslands.

It might be time to push some of these into color...

Some linework for helmets... I will probably render these soon.

Iteration - Character costumes

So I realized the problem with my early thumbnails was that I was trying to create a single outfit for a jack-of-all trades character. He needed to be constantly upgrading his gear and I assume he would need a different getup for just about every planet he visited. Basically putting him in one suit wasn't really going to give me the flexibility I needed.

I decided to go with a basic character design and just work the costume up in layers iteratively. This gives me the flexibility to tailor his suit to any environment I can think of.

This gave me some fun iterations with a winter costume and a jetpack version, which I can flesh out a bit more in future iterations.

Hero Thumbs

Hey everyone,

I wasn't really happy with either of my sketches for the hunter, so I decided to put in some time today and knock out some thumbnails. I feel like I'm getting there, and there are elements I like in most of these designs. Some are a little outrageous, but that's what this process is for.

I'm trying to get to something that simultaneously feels agile, quick, and regal, which has been surprisingly difficult. I'm also trying to break out of my usual design habits and create something new. I'm planning on doing a few more of these, slowly narrowing my focus down, so we'll see where it goes!

Welcome to Concept Co-Op!

Jason Caffoe and I are concept artists living 1,200 miles apart. That's not going to stop us from working together on this design effort. With daily updates, we plan to create the pre-production art for a video game project. We work with a combination of digital and traditional tools.
The game we're designing is a simple premise:

A duo of intergalactic hunters that travel from planet to planet in search of the most exotic creatures... and then kill them.

This simple structure will allow us to investigate lush environments, exotic weaponry, and interesting creatures. We started with a simple task: what do the heroes look like? We'll see where it goes from here....
